Q&A
YOU HAVE QUESTIONS? GIL HAS ANSWERS...
1. Where are you located and how long has your business been open?
SF Manscaping is centrally located in downtown / financial district of San Francisco. The studio is on Market Street and above the Montgomery station. It was established in 2013.
2. What types of treatments do you offer and what is your popular / most requested treatment?
In the beginning I offered manscaping / trimming, facials, massage and waxing but these days I am just waxing & manscaping. Demand for these services grew so fast I decided to focus and specialize in these areas. The most requested service I would say is a men’s Brazilian wax and or trim. A lot of guys, (gay and straight) get the shaft, scrotum and backside waxed. Trimming these areas is highly requested also. Many are unable and or not coordinated to do it on their own.
3. What’s your manscaping / wax philosophy?
Less is more! I take a conservative approach and encourage guys to start small and try trimming before wax. Some guys are gung-ho and that’s fine but if there’s any hesitancy I definitely encourage my clients to take small steps. We can always do a sample patch test also to see what it would be like. So not every guy is team wax. Plenty are just team trim!
4. What was your most unusual request?
A client a couple years ago, before burning man, want me to shave and trim his chest so that there would be 2 hearts. It was part of his overall costume / outfits. I was able to do it by creating a cut out and following it. It turned out awesome as he sent me a pic but I should have saved it! Lol.
5. How did you get started in the business?
Previously I worked in Human Resources for a big hospital here in the city at a 9-5, desk job. Around year 7 I asked myself if I could see myself doing that for another decade and my mind said absolutely not, so I went back to school at nights. I started off in massage school thinking that route but went to esthetics school right after as I was not too sure I’d be able to make a living in just massage. It was the right move in hindsight but I didn’t know that then. I went to skin care school to learn waxing as I noticed not many male estheticians in practice so I figured I’d follow a less crowded path. Once I was finished with school, I juggled working an office job part time while trying to build the practice but after 6 months decided it was time to fly and grow the practice as much as I could.
